There are now over 60 official digital nomad visa programs worldwide. Most are marginal — the same Schengen days repackaged. The ones below are the visas that genuinely work for full-time remote workers in July 2026.

The visas worth knowing about
Portugal D8 is the gold standard for those who want EU residency long-term. It is bureaucratic to apply for (NIF, bank account, criminal records, apostilled documents) but leads to permanent residency in 5 years and citizenship in 5+. As of July 2026, Lisbon rent averages $1,450/month and Porto $1,100, with Portugal's inflation at 2.42%.
Thailand DTV is the cleanest "just let me live here" visa in Asia. Five years, 180 days per entry, no income threshold if you can show ~฿500k in savings. It is not a residency path — but for many nomads that is the feature, not the bug. Thailand's inflation sits at 1.37% in mid-2026, with Chiang Mai rent around $380/month and Bangkok at $650.
UAE Remote Work Visa is the only major DNV with genuine 0% tax. The catch is Dubai's cost of living: budget at least $3,500/month for a single nomad living modestly. Dubai rent averages $1,800/month as of July 2026, with UAE inflation at 1.66%.
Georgia's Remotely from Georgia program plus the 365-day visa-free entry for most nationalities makes Georgia the lowest-friction nomad base in the world. Foreign-source income is generally exempt, and the 1% small-business tax regime is available for solo entrepreneurs. Tbilisi rent sits at $500/month in mid-2026.
Spain's Digital Nomad Visa remains attractive for the Beckham Law tax benefit (24% flat on Spanish-source income only). Barcelona averages $1,300/month rent, Madrid $1,200, with Spanish inflation at 2.77% in July 2026.
Mexico's Temporary Resident visa offers an accessible Americas-based option with rent from $500/month in Mérida to $1,000 in Mexico City. No tax on foreign-source income if remitted carefully.
Croatia's DN Permit and Estonia's DNV round out the EU options. Tallinn rent is $750/month, Zagreb $700, and Split $800 as of mid-2026.
Visas that look good but are not
Some heavily marketed DNVs are actually worse than the underlying tourist stamp:
- Barbados Welcome Stamp — $2,000 fee for 1 year, but most nomads can already enter for 6 months visa-free.
- Bermuda Work From Bermuda — same issue.
- Several smaller programs charge high fees without offering tax benefits or residency.
How to choose
If your priority is EU residency: Portugal or Spain.
If your priority is low cost: Thailand, Georgia, Colombia, Mexico.
If your priority is 0% tax: UAE or careful structuring in Georgia.
